This talk will cover -

Leigh Bernie is a Partner at Harper Macleod LLP and advises individuals and families on a wide range of Private Client matters, including the administration of complex and high value estates, the preparation of tax efficient Wills, lifetime Inheritance tax planning and financial and welfare Powers of Attorney.


She also has experience in the creation, management and termination of trust arrangements, with a particular interest in Personal Injury and Charitable Trusts. Leigh is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and was shortlisted as a finalist for ‘Junior Solicitor of the Year’ at previous Law Awards of Scotland. 

 

• Tax: Being alert to potential tax consequences of estate planning – for general practitioners
This talk will cover various tax matters that general practitioners may need to consider for individuals when carrying out estate planning (including the taxation of a discretionary trust once established by the client).


Kathleen Martin acts for clients at all stages of their lives on a wide range of private client matters, including Wills, Powers of Attorney, Trusts, tax and succession planning, and the administration of estates. She advises on tax efficient succession planning, including lifetime gifting, Deeds of Variation for estate beneficiaries and the creation, management and termination of trust arrangements. She also advises on the administration of complex and high-value estates. 

 

• Disputes common to Private Client matters 
This talk will cover queries and contentious issues that arise regularly in Private Client matters, including challenging a will, removal of executors and trustees, applications to the court under the Requirements of Writing (Scotland) Act 1995 and using mediation as an alternative to resolving some executry-related disputes.


Carolyn Morgan is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution team at Harper Macleod LLP and advises individuals and families on a wide range of contentious Private Client matters. Being dual-qualified, she regularly acts for clients both north and south of the border representing their interests in dealing with claims involving trusts and estates. As a qualified mediator, Carolyn can also assist parties to find a resolution by providing insightful guidance to a party in mediation or when appointed as a mediator.

Marcelo Rodrigues is responsible for leading Schroders Personal Wealth’s ambitious growth plans in Scotland & Northern Ireland. He has extensive experience advising High-Net-Worth individuals in a financial services career spanning over 14 years. He’s a Chartered Management Accountant and a fully qualified Financial Adviser. Originally from Brazil, Marcelo now lives in Edinburgh with his wife, three children and their fox red labrador.
